Asphalt shingles are what most Southwest Missouri homes wear on top, and for good reason: they cost less than most other roofing materials, come in many colors and are straightforward to repair. They are also the roof most affected by this region's weather, from hail in the spring to heat and humidity in the summer.
A shingle roof is a layered system. The shingles you see are the top layer; underneath are the underlayment, the drip edge, the protection at the valleys and the flashing at every wall and vent. A roof can look fine from the yard and still fail at one of those hidden layers.
Whether you need an entire shingle roof installed, an old one replaced or a few shingles repaired after a storm, the work is largely about good practice: nailing in the right place, aligning the courses, sealing the starter row and getting the flashing right. Those details are invisible when done well, and they are what shingles depend on.
We look at the roof and talk through shingle choices, colors and what suits the house and your budget.
Old shingles come off, the deck is checked and repaired and drip edge and underlayment go down.
Valleys, eaves and other vulnerable spots get extra water protection before the shingles go on.
We lay shingles course by course from the eave, with the nailing pattern and alignment the manufacturer calls for.
Chimneys, walls and vents get flashing, ridge and ventilation are completed and the site is cleaned up.
Shingle roofs vary less in price than metal ones, but several things still move the number:
Otto has been installing roofs for 36 years, including recent large jobs of about 300 squares. That is a lot of time learning which details hold up in Missouri weather and which do not.
We tell you what we see on your roof, put it into a detailed estimate and let you decide. Honest evaluations and clean work are what we are building the company on.
We install and repair shingle roofs in Pierce City, Monett, Joplin and Springfield. See our Monett roofing page and Joplin roofing page.
Architectural (also called dimensional) shingles are thicker, multi-layer shingles with a textured look, and they are the most common choice on new roofs. They generally hold up better to wind than the older flat three-tab style, and they look better. Ask us what we recommend for your roof.
Lifespan varies with the shingle, the installation, the attic ventilation and the weather. Heat, hail and wind shorten it, and good installation and ventilation extend it. We tell you what to expect for the shingle we recommend, without promising a number.
Age, sun and heat gradually dry out the asphalt, and the shingle curls and sheds the mineral granules that protect it. Poor attic ventilation speeds this up, which is why ventilation is part of a good installation.
We will try. Colors fade and product lines are discontinued, so a perfect match is not always possible. We pick the closest available shingle and tell you what the repair will look like.
A sound deck, underlayment, drip edge at the eaves and rakes, ice and water or similar protection at valleys and other vulnerable spots, and flashing at every wall, chimney and vent. The shingles only work if all of those are right.
