Choosing and Working With Roofing Materials

The material on top is one of the biggest decisions in any roofing job, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong without the right information. This category groups our work by material: metal roof installation, metal roof repair and asphalt shingle roofing, the three most common systems on homes, shops and farm buildings around Pierce City.

Each material fails differently and each needs a different way of working. Asphalt shingles lose their granules, curl and lift; metal roofs lose fasteners, open at seams and fail at flashing; both can be perfectly fine on top and rotting underneath if the deck or underlayment is wrong. Knowing the material means knowing what to look for.

Elite also works with tile and wood shake roofing, which show up on a minority of homes in the region. If your roof is one of those, call us so we can talk through the specifics, as we cover those materials by conversation instead of with a dedicated page for each.

Why Material Experience Matters

Otto has spent 36 years roofing with shingles, metal, tile, wood shake and flat membranes. That range matters when your roof does not fit the standard picture, such as a metal roof on a house, a mixed-material roof on an addition or a farm building with a low pitch.

We will tell you honestly which material suits your roof and your budget, and we will explain what we would use under it, so you can compare quotes on the same terms.

Roofing Materials FAQs

Which roofing material is best for my home?

There is no single best material. Asphalt shingle costs less up front and is easy to repair. Metal costs more up front, sheds water and snow quickly and can last a very long time. The right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay, the roof pitch and the look you want.

Is a metal roof louder in the rain?

It can be on a bare frame, such as a shop or barn. On a house with solid decking and underlayment beneath the panels, the difference is much smaller than most people expect. Ask us about the specifics of your building.

Can a metal roof be installed over my old shingles?

Sometimes, depending on the condition of the existing roof and local requirements, but a full tear-off is often the better choice because it lets the deck be inspected. We will tell you what we see on your roof.

Do you work with tile and wood shake roofs too?

Yes. Tile and wood shake are less common in this area, but Elite works with both. They each need a different approach to fastening and flashing, so call us to talk through your roof.

How do I pick between asphalt and metal for a commercial building or shop?

Low-slope and flat buildings often use membrane systems like TPO, while pitched shops and barns often use metal panels. Tell us the pitch and use of the building and we will recommend a material that suits it.
